Key Strategy Takeaways

  • BiS is a decision rule, not a fixed three-item list: match damage type, mana needs, target access, and the next fight.
  • AD carries usually need a way to solve armor, reliable damage, and sustained attacks; do not hold components forever for a perfect roll.
  • AP carries need a cast cycle that fits the champion, while tanks need the defensive stat mix that answers the lobby.

TFT BiS Items at a Glance

There is no universal BiS package: the best three items depend on the carry's damage type, mana needs, target access, stage, and available components. This Set 18 / Patch 18.3 guide was reviewed October 5, 2026. Use the role table as a starting point, then choose a champion-specific plan below.

Recipes and unit connections are available in the item matrix and champion directory. Those static TFTFans references were generated September 17 for Patch 18.2; they are not live October 5 tooltips. Confirm exact effects in the current client and use Riot's Patch 18.3 updates for subsequent balance changes.

RoleReliable starting buildWhat the build solves
AD carryArmor shred + reliable damage + attack speed or survivabilitySolves the target's defenses without sacrificing sustained damage
AP casterMana + spell scaling + a flex damage or utility slotLets the champion cast on the correct cycle and convert casts into kills
Main tankHealth + the defensive stat the lobby demands + a tempo itemBuys time for the carry instead of chasing three generic tank items

Bramble Vest, Dragon's Claw, Warmog's Armor, and other defensive items answer different damage patterns. Treat the table as a decision shortcut rather than a rigid rule: a strong slam that preserves tempo is usually better than holding components for a perfect three-item board.

Understanding BiS (Best in Slot)

BiS means best in slot: the strongest fitting item choices for a specified champion, board, and situation. A website's top-performing build is an observation under its filters, not proof that those three items are always mathematically optimal. Star level, patch, rank, sample size, and the rest of the board all matter.

Set 18 champion build starting points

These are candidate packages explained in the linked champion guides, not a controlled ranking of every possible three-item combination. Adapt the third slot and do not wait for an Artifact you cannot craft.

Carry / roleItems to considerDecision that changes the build
Ezreal, physical spell carryShojin plus Deathblade or Infinity Edge; consider Last WhisperDoes the board already have reliable armor reduction? See the Ezreal build guide for dated item observations
Warwick, melee physical carryTitan's Resolve and Shojin are Riot's 18.3 reference optionsCan Warwick survive and keep ramping? The Wolf Pack guide separates carry items from sacrifice choice
Veigar, reroll casterBlue Buff and Jeweled Gauntlet; a fitting Artifact can change the planCan the frontline buy repeated casts? Compare the Veigar guide and its labelled older snapshot with the current Artifact guide
LeBlanc, mana-based casterBlue Buff, Shojin, or a damage/utility slotHer October 5 sample separates common items from better observed outcomes; see the LeBlanc TFT build
Diana, melee Magic FighterDamage plus a survival or shred optionCheck her target access and frontline exposure; the Diana TFT build labels its Patch 18.3 sample
Main tankHealth, appropriate resists, and utilityChoose for incoming damage and the tank's kit, not because every defensive item has the same role

The Ezreal row is supported by the source table in its guide. The Warwick pair is specifically discussed in Riot's 18.3 notes. Veigar's linked measured board is labelled Patch 18.2, so treat that package as a starting point, not a verified 18.3b best-build ranking. For broad completed-item comparisons, see the dated Set 18 item tier list; it is not a replacement for these holder-specific decisions.

How to use item statistics without misreading them

Compare builds under the same patch and star-level filters. An item average with a small sample, or an expensive three-item combination usually completed only in strong games, is not directly interchangeable with a widely built early item. Single-item averages also do not establish the best trio.

After identifying a plausible build, test the missing function: casting, damage, armor or magic-resistance reduction, healing reduction, or survival. If a teammate already supplies a function reliably, spending another carry slot on it may leave a different weakness unresolved. Watch the fight before deciding that the lowest average-placement row is the answer.

1. Physical AD Carries

  • Solve the target first: use armor shred when the lobby's frontline is the reason your carry cannot finish kills.
  • Choose a damage multiplier: critical damage, raw AD, or another item that matches the champion's spell and attack pattern.
  • Finish for the fight: attack speed, sustain, or a defensive option can be better than a third damage item when the carry is dying before the second cast.

2. Magic AP Burst Casters

  • Start with the cast cycle: Blue Buff, Spear of Shojin, or another mana option is only correct when it produces a useful cast timing for that champion.
  • Add spell scaling: Jeweled Gauntlet, Rabadon's Deathcap, and similar choices should support the unit's damage profile rather than fill a checklist.
  • Keep a flex slot: utility, survivability, or magic resistance reduction can outperform a second pure AP item against the actual lobby.

3. Main Tanks

  • Read the incoming damage: choose armor against physical and crit-heavy boards, magic resistance against spell-heavy boards, and health when both are mixed or the unit's ability scales with health.
  • Value time, not a label: the best tank item is the one that keeps the frontline alive through the next cast cycle.
  • Check the holder: a temporary frontline can use a strong slam now while your final tank waits for a better component combination.

When a Tank Item Needs Its Own Decision Guide

This page is the broad role-and-recipe reference. For the question behind a specific component slam, use the Bramble Vest TFT guide to decide whether the next lobby is physical or critical-strike heavy, who should hold it, and what defensive stat should complete the item pair. For a caster whose value changes with the current item card and their combat role, use the Adaptive Helm TFT guide before copying a generic AP build.

TFT BiS items FAQ

Is BiS always the same three items?

No. BiS changes with the champion's ability, target access, stage, existing components, and the lobby. A strong slam that saves health is often better than waiting for a theoretical perfect package.

Should I follow the guide or the item data page?

Use this guide for the decision framework and the linked carry guides for source-backed examples. Use the item matrix and champion database for their labelled September 17 snapshot, then verify changed effects in the live client.

When should I give a carry a defensive item?

Give up a damage slot when the carry is consistently dying before it can complete its cast or attack cycle. A live carry with slightly less damage usually contributes more than a dead carry with perfect items.
