Blackthorn TFT Guide: Sacrifice Hex & 2/4/6 Breakpoints

How Blackthorn works in TFT Set 18: 2/4/6 bonuses, choosing a sacrifice by role and upgrade, the six-unit tooltip fix, and when a splash beats forcing six.

Key Strategy Takeaways

  • The ally on the Blackthorn hex is sacrificed before combat; teamwide Health and Blackthorn-only additional stats are different bonuses.
  • Choose a sacrifice for its role, cost, and star level, then compare the lost combat unit with the benefit to your remaining board.
  • At six Blackthorn the sacrifice still dies: Riot explicitly corrected the misleading tooltip in Patch 18.3.
  • Use a two-unit splash when it helps your current carry; forcing four or six is not automatically an upgrade.

How does Blackthorn work in TFT Set 18?

Blackthorn sacrifices the ally on its special hex before combat. Your champions receive Health, while Blackthorn champions receive additional stats determined by the sacrificed unit's role, star level, and cost. Those are separate layers: the trait does not give every champion the full role-based bonus.

Checked October 5, 2026. The table below follows the current DA_18_Blackthorn entry in CommunityDragon's extracted game data. Riot's 18.3 patch notes and B update provide the balance and tooltip corrections discussed below.

Active Blackthorn unitsHealth bonusAdditional sacrifice-bonus scaling
2175Base bonus
435030% stronger
660060% stronger

The last column strengthens the sacrifice bonus; it is not a statement that every statistic on every unit rises by that percentage. Inspect the live trait panel after changing the sacrificed unit.

Which champions have Blackthorn?

The five regular Set 18 members are Rek'Sai, Veigar, Warwick, Azir, and Malphite. There is also a Blackthorn variant of Lux, a five-cost Avatar; current extracted game data lists that variant separately. An emblem is therefore not the only way to reach the six-count breakpoint.

Riot's Set 18 overview describes Lux as an origin-specific Avatar with extra trait count. Check which Lux variant you actually bought and the active trait panel: a Lux of a different origin, or an arbitrary sixth champion, does not add Blackthorn. Do not sacrifice board strength while waiting for a specific legendary variant.

Use the trait directory to inspect connections and the team builder to count a candidate board. TFTFans' static directory is a September 17 Patch 18.2 snapshot, so use the live client for exact current stat values.

What should you sacrifice?

Start with the remaining board's problem, not the most expensive unit on the bench. A sacrifice can improve the trait while removing the unit that was actually winning the fight.

Your board's situationDecision to test
Warwick is the itemized carryRiot's 18.3 notes recommend an Attack Fighter sacrifice rather than a Tank for the Wolf Bros line
An AP Blackthorn carry needs more spell pressureCompare an AP-role sacrifice and check its live preview; do not assume any AP-looking champion has the role you need
The frontline cannot buy a second castCompare the defensive sacrifice option with simply keeping that unit alive on the board
The best unit you could sacrifice is your main carryProtect the carry first; look for an expendable alternative or abandon the sacrifice plan

Riot reduced the AP sacrifice's base damage amplification from 14% to 12% in the September 24 B update. An older calculator showing 14% should not be treated as the live answer. This guide deliberately does not reproduce an unverified cost-by-star multiplier grid.

A useful opportunity-cost test

Suppose an upgraded tank is holding your defensive items and is the only unit stopping the enemy from reaching the backline. Sacrificing it may make the remaining Blackthorn units stronger on paper, yet leave your carry without protection. Compare that with sacrificing a spare eligible unit and keeping the tank fighting.

Alternatively, if a support unit contributes little beyond its trait slot while an itemized Blackthorn carry can use the bonus, the sacrifice may be worthwhile. The relevant question is which complete board wins the next fight, not which individual sacrifice produces the largest tooltip.

Should you play two, four, or six Blackthorn?

Two is a splash decision. It can fit a board that already wants two of the natural units without spending multiple slots on weaker trait filler.

Four is a commitment decision. Count the upgrades, item holders, and damage you give up to add the third and fourth members. A stronger number in the trait panel does not rescue a board with no upgraded tank or effective carry.

Six is a cap requiring enough active trait count, through Blackthorn Lux or an applicable emblem route. Plan how to reach it before spending heavily, and compare the added unit or emblem holder's actual combat contribution with the alternative board. Do not force six from an opener that has neither the units nor access to the extra count.

For complete roster and economy plans, keep the different carry lines separate:

  • Warwick Wolf Pack: Warwick and Murkwolf, with sacrifice choice supporting a physical carry plan.
  • Flora Azir reroll: a Level 7 carry line rather than a generic six-Blackthorn board.
  • Executioner Malphite: a different item and trait condition; do not transfer its plan to every Blackthorn game.

Does the unit survive at six Blackthorn?

No. Riot explicitly says the six-unit tooltip displayed incorrect stats and incorrectly omitted the sacrifice. The unit is still sacrificed. A plan that relies on that unit also fighting needs to be changed; reaching six does not turn the sacrifice hex into a free buff tile.

This is especially important when following PBE videos or older screenshots. Match the live patch, active count, and actual behavior before copying an interaction.

Before-combat checklist

  1. Count active Blackthorn after the final swap.
  2. Confirm which ally is on the sacrifice hex and check its actual role and upgrade.
  3. Inspect the resulting bonus in the live panel.
  4. Check the remaining frontline and damage, not just the bonus number.
  5. Make sure an essential itemized carry is not on the hex accidentally.
  6. Scout again after moving the board: losing one body can change target access and expose a backline unit.

Blackthorn TFT FAQ

Does the sacrificed champion need to be Blackthorn?

The trait text says the ally on the Blackthorn hex. The bonus is based on the sacrificed ally's role, cost, and star level; additional stats go to Blackthorn champions. Do not confuse the sacrifice requirement with the recipients of those stats.

Is an expensive sacrifice always better?

No. Cost and star level influence the bonus, but so does role, and you are removing a combat unit. Compare both resulting boards before giving up an upgraded carry or tank.

Should I buy a unit only to sacrifice it?

Only if the next-fight improvement is worth the economy and bench commitment. Protect interest and the upgrades your carry actually needs; a larger sacrifice preview is not an objective by itself.

Is this a sacrifice calculator?

No. It is a decision guide with verified breakpoints and current patch caveats. Use the in-game preview for exact role, cost, and star-level outcomes rather than an older PBE formula.
