Key Strategy Takeaways

  • Ezreal is a four-cost physical carry with Elderwood and Executioner; aim to upgrade him at Level 8 rather than treating him as a cheap reroll carry.
  • Shojin, Last Whisper, Deathblade, Infinity Edge, and Red Buff are frequent item candidates in a Patch 18.3 sample, not a controlled 18.3b best-in-slot test.
  • Six natural Elderwood champions still activate the five-unit breakpoint; seven needs Gnar, an emblem, or another applicable trait source.
  • PivotTFT listed Elderwood Ezreal as a B-tier Fast 8 line on Patch 18.3b; this is a viable option, not a top-tier guarantee.
  • The cited item sample is Patch 18.3 data, so recheck live stats after balance patches.

What is the best Ezreal TFT build in Set 18?

Ezreal is a four-cost Elderwood / Executioner physical carry. Start by solving repeated casts, physical damage, and enemy armor: Spear of Shojin plus a damage item is a useful starting direction, while Last Whisper becomes important when your board lacks another reliable armor-reduction source. The third slot should answer the fight, not complete a memorized checklist.

This guide was updated on October 6, 2026, while Patch 18.3b was the current Set 18 balance snapshot. It covers the Set 18 version, not older Academy, Scrap, or Blaster Ezreal builds. The item table below is the newest dated Ezreal sample located from TFT Codex (October 2, Patch 18.3), so it does not isolate 18.3b games. Unit identity and ability structure were checked against CommunityDragon's extracted Set 18 game data.

Ezreal's Forest's Flurry deals physical damage and repositions him away from his target. Repeated casts build toward a larger fourth-cast attack. His mana bar is 0/30, so casting frequency matters; the fact that part of the kit scales with AP does not make a generic three-AP-item build the default.

Ezreal items: candidates and what to check

The following observations come from TFT Codex's Ezreal page, updated October 2 at 00:24 UTC. Its Diamond+ champion sample contains 371,461 games and is labelled Patch 18.3, not an isolated 18.3b dataset.

ItemGames with itemAverage placement
Spear of Shojin114,3374.29
Last Whisper91,4984.24
Deathblade70,8774.10
Infinity Edge64,8194.30
Red Buff61,7974.12

These are individual-item observations, not results for a three-item combination. Better boards can obtain different items, and surviving longer changes what can be built. The lower number beside Deathblade does not prove it should replace Shojin in every game.

Is Ezreal a strong Set 18 carry on Patch 18.3b?

Treat Ezreal as a playable, conditional carry, not a line to force every game. PivotTFT's Patch 18.3b comp list places Elderwood Ezreal in B tier as a medium-difficulty Fast 8 composition (updated October 3). That is an editorial tier, not a measured guarantee; it does tell you the line is a reasonable option when the board, items, and upgrades cooperate rather than the patch's safest default.

The item numbers above predate the 18.3b hotfix. Use them to understand common item patterns, then check the current patch's item and board data before treating small placement gaps as meaningful. For the wider current shortlist, see the Patch 18.4b Set 18 comps report.

Before committing components, ask:

  1. Are casts too slow? Compare a casting item with the actual spell cycle you see.
  2. Is the frontline surviving? A carry item cannot compensate for your tank dying before Ezreal gets meaningful casts.
  3. Is armor the bottleneck? Check who provides armor reduction and whether it reaches Ezreal's target.
  4. Does the next fight need utility? Do not duplicate a function already supplied reliably by another unit while leaving a different problem unsolved.

Use the item matrix for component recipes and the TFT BiS guide for the broader decision framework. TFTFans' static item database is a September 17 Patch 18.2 snapshot; exact current values should be checked in the live client, not inferred from that older snapshot.

Elderwood Ezreal example board at Level 8

PivotTFT's Elderwood Ezreal guide, updated October 3 for 18.3b, provides this reference roster:

FunctionUnits
Main carryEzreal
Frontline coreHecarim, Alistar
Elderwood supportOrnn, Xayah, LeBlanc
Additional damage and trait connectionsSoraka, Fiddlesticks

For LeBlanc's own cast-cycle choices and dated item data, see the separate LeBlanc TFT build guide. That article covers her individual role; this page remains focused on Ezreal's board.

That is six natural Elderwood units, which means the five-unit Elderwood breakpoint is active without an extra trait source. At Level 9, adding Gnar reaches seven naturally. An Elderwood Emblem can provide a different route to seven at Level 8. Count the active trait panel rather than treating “six Elderwood units” as a six-unit bonus.

Riot's Enchanted Wilds overview explains Elderwood's placeable plants and increasing summon package. In practice, those extra bodies make positioning part of the build, not just a finishing touch. Compare candidate layouts in the team builder, then adjust them for the opponent you are actually facing.

This is a reference composition, not a TFTFans-measured top-four guarantee. If you find stronger upgraded units that preserve the important functions, they can be better than forcing every name in the table.

If you are queuing Double Up, do not assume a ranked board's solo placement predicts the best duo. Our Set 18 Double Up comps and partner guide uses mode-specific evidence and explains how to coordinate two separate boards.

When to roll and when to pivot

Ezreal is a four-cost target, so this is a leveling plan. Build an upgraded early board, preserve enough health to reach a useful Level 8 roll, and keep a temporary physical item holder. The Fast 8 guide explains the economy and stabilization decision.

At the rolldown, buy a playable frontline alongside the carry. A one-star Ezreal behind a weak tank is not a complete spike. Stop rolling when the board can contest the next fights and you have a reason to rebuild economy; continue spending when preserving gold would simply cost the game.

Do not chase Ezreal three-star just because you have reached two-star. A four-cost reroll chase consumes gold and bench space that could instead improve frontline, secondary damage, or level. Scout how many copies other players are holding before choosing a high-risk cap.

If Ezreal does not appear, keep the strongest upgraded physical holder rather than selling the board prematurely. He can also be a supporting trait unit in a Rengar / Kha'Zix board; being present in a composition does not automatically make him its itemized carry.

Positioning checks before each fight

  • Start Ezreal behind the frontline, with a path to keep attacking and casting.
  • Watch where his reposition actually lands. Move surrounding units or summons if the new location leaves him exposed.
  • Give tanks and Elderwood plants the job of buying time; do not place every body in front of one enemy carry without checking target access.
  • Scout the strongest opponent. A copied corner position is not protection if that side is being targeted.

Ezreal TFT FAQ

Is Ezreal AD or AP in Set 18?

His spell deals physical damage. Build around the actual kit and cast cycle rather than importing an older-set Ezreal build or assuming AP-only items because the spell also has AP scaling.

Should Ezreal use Shojin or Blue Buff?

Both appear in the cited item sample. Choose according to the current item effects, components, and combat cycle. The table above does not compare controlled three-item builds, so it cannot establish a universal winner.

Do I need an Elderwood Emblem?

Not to field the example board. Without one, the Level 8 roster has six Elderwood champions and activates five. Gnar at Level 9 is a natural route to seven.

Is this an S-tier comp?

This guide does not assign it an S tier. It explains a supported carry option and its conditions; item data for Ezreal is not the same thing as a measured ranking for this exact eight-unit board.
